7 Barnouw, Adriaan J. [Brueghel, Pieter]. The Fantasy of Pieter Brueghel. With 45 Full Page Engravings.
New York: Lear Publishers, (1947).
Oblong quarto, black cloth & yellow boards (hardcover), gilt letters, illus. endpapers, 100 pp. From text: Pieter Brueghel was a lonely pioneer in the age of the Reformation, and his art a reaction against the style and aesthetic standards of his time. The Italian manner was then in vogue in the Netherlands, large canvases full of contorted figures, dull in coloring, false in pathos...[Brueghel's] art was a reaction of native realism against foreign influence, an aesthetic revolt coinciding with the people's revolt against Spanish rule. He drove the nude heroes and gods of classical mythology off the canvas and painted in their stead the native crowd with naked realism. Humanistic culture, with its hero worship, its cult of Latin, and its contempt for the vulgar, found a formidable antagonist in Brueghel, who with his brush spoke a language that was pure plastic Dutch. Brueghel's art was not only an asethetic but also a social protest...

13 Boxer, David and Veerle Poupeye. Modern Jamaican Art.
Kingston, Jamaica: Ian Randle Publishers, on behalf of The University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund, (1998). First Edition.
Square quarto, red boards (hadrcover), gilt letters, 192 pp. Illustrated in full-color. Fine, in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Modern Jamaican art has only recently begun to receive the international attention that it deserved, yet there is currently no survey of this magnificent body of creativity in print. This special publication will correct this anomaly. The text of the book comprises two lucidly illustrated essays by leading scholars of Jamaican art. First, David Boxer's contribution is his landmark essay, Jamaican Art 1922-1982, in which he outlines the chronology and development of modern Jamaican art against the backdrop of the art produced in Jamaica in previous centuries. The outpourings of our finest artsts -- Manley, Dunkley, Abrahams, Huie, Kapo, Hyde, Parboosingh, Barrington Watson, Milton George, Everald Brown and others -- are examined in the social context of colonialism; of the nationalist stirrings of the thirties; of the drive towards independence; and the internationalist thrusts of the avant-garde in the sixties and seventies. This is followed by Veerle Poupeye's essay, Contemporary Jamaican Art, which concentrates on the developments in the eighties and nineties, and expands the overview of Jamaican art to include young artists who practise outside of the island but who have retained much of the special ethos that informs Jamaican art. The essays are accompanied by supporting biographical information on each of the eighty-two artists covered in the plates and a practical bibliography. Additionally, a total of 134 full-page colour plates drawn from the collections of the National Gallery of Jamaica and from many private collections offer a superb overview of the principal Jamaican artists of this century.
