Rutland, Vermont: Charles E. Tuttle Co., Publishers, (1968).
Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 289 pp. Neat former-owner stamp and small, inked notation; otherwise, Fine; in a Very Good, price-clipped dust jacket with minor edgewear. From dust jacket: The great majority of the plants discussed in this book are not native to the Hawaiian Islands but originated from and still exist all over the world in many countries of the Temperate Zone, including parts of the southern United States. What are wayside plants? According to the author, they are smaller plants that may ordinarily attract attention in the fields, waste-lands and along the road-sides...which persist without intentional human assistance. The book contains detailed descriptions and illustrations of approximately 160 varieties of wayside plants. In addition, it includes a lengthy bibliography, an index, and a unique ŇColor of FlowerÓ Key which groups plants by the predominant color of thier flowers. Says the author in explaining why he wrote this book, Many of our wayside plants are frequently passed by unnoticed...but when some conspicuous character of the plant develops -- as color, form of flower, peculiar seed capsules or an attractive kind of fruit -- unusual attention is at once aroused and questions arise in the mind of the observer, as What is the name of this plant? What are its uses or detrimental qualities? Where did it come from? etc...
