From dust jacket: This newest addition covers the five years following Boswell's marriage in 1769 -- crowded, active years in which he starts a family, acquires reputation as an advocate, and also renews his literary ambitions and labours. He even manages to make two extended visits to the city of his fondest hopes and closest friends -- London. That it is a comedy, no one can deny who follows Boswell in this account of his zigzag course between the women whom he could love but certainly not marry -- his former Italian mistress, Girolama Piccolomini; Euphemia, the gardener's daughter of three-and-twenty; the pert and rompish Mrs. Dodds, spearated from her husband and the mother of Boswell's illegitimate daughter Sally -- and those women he could certainly marry and could perhaps also love -- the distant Dutch Zelide; his cousin, Miss Bosville, the Yorkshire beauty; the unidentified Miss B. who combined personal charms with the prospect of inheriting valuable mines; Catherine Blair, remote relative and heiress; the lovely Irish girl, Mary Ann Boyd, just sixteen, formed like a Grecian nymph and likely to receive a comfortable inheritance; and that most excellent of all Boswell's women, his cousin, Margaret Montgomerie. The see-saw of his affections, the approaches and retreats, the pauses to weigh prudence against emotion, form a tale of the young man in and out of love that ends with marriage and delights the reader all the way...
