1 Jaynes, Richard A. The Laurel Book: Rediscovery of the North American Laurels.
New York: Hafner Press, (1975). First Edition, First Printing. Review Copy, with Publisher's blurb laid-in.
Octavo, black cloth (hardcover), silver letters, xii + 180 pp. Former-owner's neat stamps and published review pasted to rear endpaper; otherwise, Near-Fine, with light foxing; in a Near-Fine dust jacket with slight rubbing along edges. From dust jacket: mountain laurel, the favorite garden laurel, is thought by many to be the most beautiful flowering shrub in North America. A native American plant, at least one of the varieties of laurel will thrive in any garden in the continental United States. The Laurel Book is the first complete record of the laurel's history, botany, taxonomy, genetics, culture, and propagation. Although laurels have long been popular garden plants, garden ers have not cultivated or experimented with them, and, until 1961, they had not been bred successfully. To assist and encourage growers in hybridizing laurels, Richard Jaynes identifies the cultivars worthy of propagation and gives instructions -- detailed enough for the expert, yet clear and simple enough for the amateur -- for breeding them. He emphasizes the genetic variation and rich diversity among the laurels which makes growing them a delight and a challenge. The Laurel Book is a helpful reference of immediate and lasting value to gardeners, nurserymen, horticulturalists -- anyone who enjoys plants.
