1 Wilson, Charles Morrow. Dow Baker and the Great Banana Fleet. The Story of the Yankee Skipper Who Befriended an Island and Introduced Bananas to America.m
Harrisburg, PA: Stackpole Books, (1972).
Octavo, yellow cloth (hardcover), 128 pp. Near-Fine, with light foxing (age darkend spotting) along page edges, in a Near-Fine dust jacket with light foxing along spine. From jacket: Blown off-course by a tropical storm that left his two-masted schooner battered and wronched, Dow Baker took on a cargo of the strange fruit just to recoup some of the cost of extensive repairs. Largely unknown on America's east coast, the bananas were sampled -- and welcomed. They sold at a handsome profit, and Baker knew he had finished with fishing...Along with the bananas, he brought to Boston two other products of the Caribbean...two nearly grown Jamaican boys who had joined his ship's company and won his respect and affection. Legally adopting the boys, the Bakers made them permanent members of the family, and of the newly formed L. D. Baker Company...He called many Jamaicans son and sent them to America for an education until he built schools and hospitals that were staffed and run by local people..
