1 Hughes, Nathaniel Cheairs, Jr. The Battle of Belmont: Grant Strikes South.
Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, [1991]. First Edition.
Octavo, red cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xvii, 310 pp. Fine (As New), in a Fine (As New), mylar protected dust jacket. Using diaries and letters of participants, offical documents, and contemporary newspaper accounts, Nathaniel Highes provides the only full-length tactical study of the battle that catapulted Grant into prominence. Throughout the narrative, Hughes draws sketches of the lives and fates of individual soldiers who fought on both sides, especially of the colorful and enormously dissimilar principal actors, Grant and Polk.
