Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), yellow letters, 314 + fold-out map. Very Good, with foxing throughout; in a chipped and torn dust jacket. From dust jacket: The outstanding points about this narrative of air adventure are the uniqueness of the adventure itself and the extraordinary gift the airman has for vivid narration. The adventure was to fly solo in a Moth from New Zealand to Norfolk Island; thence to Lord Howe Island; thence to Australia. In the first hop the problem was mainly one of navigation; the destination was a tiny island only a few miles long, isolated in the Pacific. The airman had to find that one small spot or perish. In the second hop, to the same problem of navigation was added the danger of riding out a hurricane; this resulted in the wrecking of the plane. the third, and most extraordinary achievement, was the rebuilding of the plane with the assistance of the islanders, and the amazing feat of flying the rest of the way to Australia with the rebuilt engine spluttering and missing most of the way. Such a flight, conducted without publicity and purely for the love of it, would be memorable even if the airman could not tell the story. But Mr. Chichester is not only an airman -- he is a sympathetic and exciting writer; the three parts of the book build together into a most stirring adventure story.
