1 McGhee, Robert. Copper Eskimo Prehistory.
Ottawa: National Museums of Canada, National Museum of Man, 1972. Publication in Archaeology, No. 2.
Octavo, paperbound (stiff, light brown wrappers), xi + 141 pp. Very Good+ with light edgewear & sunning to edges. From Introduction: The Copper Eskimo, the most westerly of theCentral Eskimo populations, inhabit southern Victoria ISland and the adjacent mainland area in the central Canadian Arctic. Although contacted briefly by several British expeditions during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Copper Eskimo remained in virtual isolation from direct European influence until the early twentieth century, when they were described ethnographically by Stefansson, Jenness, and Rasmussen. The population of this tribe in early historic times seems to have been about 800 people, living in scattered nomadic groups engaged in fishing and caribou hunting during the summer months and congregating in a few large bands for winter sealing from the sea ice. Most of the Copper Eskimo now live in the commiunities of Coppermine, Holman, Cambridge Bay, and Bathurst Inlet and have achieved a relatively successful adaptation to the culture and economy of the modren Canadian north....
