1 Weintraub, Stanley; Editor. [Shaw, Bernard]. Bernard Shaw: The Diaries, 1885-1897. With Early Autobiographical Notebooks and Diaries, and an Abortive 1917 Diary. Volumes I and II of a Two Volume Set.
University Park: The Pennsylvania State University Press, [[1986].
Two Volumes. Octavo, grey cloth (hardcover), 1241 pp. Fine, in Very Good+ dust jackets with lightly rubbed edges. The G.B.S. diaries, as now annotated, are a lens with which to examine radical intellectual life in the London of the 1880s and 1890s. We not only meet Shaw striving daily to make something of himself; we also encounter the people on the fringes as well as within the vortex of radical politics in late-Victorian England. Through Shaw the journalist and critic, successively, of books, arts, music and theater, we confront the writers and books; artists and art; composers, instrumentalists, singers, and conductors, and their music; plays, players, and playwrights of his time -- a cross-section of late-Victorian culture. **Additional shipping required for Priority or International orders.

2 Weintraub, Stanley. Four Rossettis: A Victorian Biography.
New York: Weybright and Talley, (1977). First Edition.
Octavo, brown cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xiii + 303 pp. Near-Fine, with light foxing to page edges; in a Very Good dust jacket with lightly sunned spine & light edgewear. From dust jacket: ̉The collective story of the sons and daughters of Gabriele Rossetti moves among political radic als, bohemian artists and writers, withdrawn intellectuals and reclusive dreamers. And the scenes range from the rivalry among artists for a favorite model, to suicides and attempted suicides, seances in creaking old houses, the ehumation of a body -- and a book -- by the light of a graveyard bonfire, episodes of hallucinatory madness and alcoholic delirium, affairs of the heart ranging from the staid and impoverished to the prolific and adulterous, the publication of an avant-garde magazine few people read until nearly fifty years after it had failed, and the printing of an anarchist newspaper in the home of a proper official of the Queen. Two of the four Rossettis were geniuses, one of them -- Dante Gabriel -- among the rare creative beings in any age to be influential in both art and literature. A third gave up the competition for fame to seek the consolations of heaven, while the atheist fourth became the long-lived and zealous guardian of the family reputaion. Collectively they were a fascinating, creative family whose closely woven story has never been told as such because the notoriety of one and the genius of another have served to eclipse the remaining two...
