2 Breytenbach, Breyten. The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist.
London: Faber and Faber, [1984].
Octavo, black cloth (hardcover), 396 pp. Fine, in a Fine dust jacket. Breytenbach is one of South Africa's finest contemporary writers. The True Confessions of an Albino Terrorist is his record of seven years-- much of the time in solitary confinement -- in South Africa's prisons...Here, in pitiless and gripping detail, is the anatomy of life in one of the worst prison systems in the world: the depersonalization, the physical and psychological torture, the condemned lives on Death Row, the hangings, the warders, the routines, and above all, the thousand-and-one tiny obsessions of a man left alone with himself for years at a stretch. The story of Breytenbach's testimony in these harrowing pages is the story of great art throughout the ages: the marriage of a fine literary mind with a succession of experiences so shattering that only art can transform them into a bearable recollection.

4 Burr, J. Millard and Robert O. Collins. Darfur: The Long Road to Disaster.
Princeton: Markus Wiener Publishers, (2006).
Octavo, softbound (slick, full-color photo. illus. wrappers), 340 pp. Fine (as New). From lower cover: Images of the genocide in Darfur have shocked the Western world: Upwards of 300,000 of its inhabitants have died, and another 2.5 million have become refugees. Those affected by the violence are estimated at almost 4 million, 700,000 of whom are now beyond the reach of humanitarian assistance. These are staggering numbers, and the fractious insurgent groups involved -- Islamist Arab tribal militias against Christian black Africans and other militias made up of deserters of the Chad Army -- were and are still supported to kill, rob, and terrize by the goverments of the neighboring states of the Sudan, Chad, and Libya. These are the consequences of a decades-long war...

10 Gill, Dennis. The Coinage of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italian Somalia.
Published by the Author, (1991). First Edition.
Royal octavo, green cloth (hardcover), silver letters, xiv + 342 pp. Excised ffep.; otherwise, Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: This book is designed to give the reader a telescope back into time to view the progression of monetary development in the area of the Horn of Africa, focusing on Ethiopia and the former colonies of Eritrea and Italian Somalia. It is also meant to provide a catalogue of the known coins and other numismatically related items of these areas . Part I begins by taking a brief look at Ethiopia's ancient monty, the output of the Aksumite Kingdom. This Kingdom, which traded with the great Roman and Persian civilizatons, produced its own fine gold, silver and bronze coinage. Various forms of primitive money are also discussed, with special emphasis on Ethiopia's “amole,” or salt bar money. Travelers to Ethiopia through the ages hae recorded their impressions concerning the variety of primitive money types in use and many of their comments are chronicled here. The famous Maria Theresa or “Levant” dollar of Austria is studied, and also the coinage of Ethiopia's mysterious walled city of Harar. Finally, Ethiopia's modern coinage is examined, first the beautiful coinage of Emperor Menelik, and the the issues of Empress Zauditu, Haile Selassie, and the post-monarchical coinage. The issues of the Italian colonies of Eritrea and Italian Somalia are also discussed. Part II provides the collector and the dealer with a comprehensive enumeration of the coins, commemorative medals, tokens and paper money of Ethiopia and the two former Italian colonies. Of particular interest are a number of generally unknown patterns and medals of Ethiopia, listed here together for the first time. Detailed descriptions and comments are presented, along with photographs of the items. Translations into English from the Amharic and other foreign scripts are also given. Part III presents the reader with a historical overview. Ethiopia's early history is examined, and the captivating tale of Solomon and Sheba is related according to Ethiopian tradition. The focus is then placed on Ethiopia's murky middle ages, including the story of the enigmatic “Prester John” and the timely arrival of Portuguese warriors in defense of Ethiopia's Christianity. The British Expedition against the nineteenth century Emperor Theodore is highlighted as well as the ascendacy of Menelik and his victory at Adowa which preserved Ethiopia's freedom. The long reign of Ras Tafari (later Haile Selassie I) is traced, detailing his efforts to bring Ethiopia from a feudal state into the modern world. Finally, a brief history of Italian Somalia is chronicled.

18 Lewis, Ethelreda. Trader Horn: Being the Life and Works of Alfred Aloysius Horn: The works written by himself at the age of seventy-three and the life, with such of his philosophy as is the gift of age & experience taken down here and edited by Ethelreda Lewis. With a Foreword by John Galsworthy.
New York: Simon and Schuster, MCMXXVII.
Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), tissue-protected frontis., map illus. endpapers, viii + 302 pp. Very Good, with former-owner bookplate and lightly rubbed edges. From Foreword: This is a gorgeous book, more full of sheer stingo than any you are likely to come across in a day's march among the bookshops of wherever you may be. These untutored memories of youth adventuring long ago in a wild place, recorded with an untutored pen in a Johannesburg dosshouse, are like the gold ore of that so-called golden City, as Alfred Aloysius Horn would call it, except indeed that the proportion of gold in them is so very much greater. Nothing more racy and full of original wisdom than the conversations at the end of each chapter has come my way for an age. The spelling of this Old Visiter -- who surely in his time has been a most notable adventurer in the raw world -- is best described as lorly, and th mixture of jejune phrasing with sayings incomparably pithy makes for a dish that will rickle the appetite of the most jaded...
