9 Reymond, Lizelle. [Norton, Lucy; Transl.]. My Life with a Brahmin Family. Translated from the French by Lucy Norton.
London: Rider & Company, (1958). First Edition.
Octavo, green boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 192 pp.Very Good, with foxing (age darkened spotting) in a like dust jacket. From dust jacket: Lizelle Reymond was in India from 1947 to 1953, and thus saw at first hand the birth of its independence and subsequent emergence as a world power. The Brahmin family with whom she stayed for much of this time lived in the Kumaon Himalaya, and each member is here faithfully described, from their great uncle Maharaj, who sat naked in contemplation on his tiger skin, to the family guru and the latest grandchild. Much of the interest of this delightful book lies in the description of individual incidents and in the skilful creation of atmosphere. The adjustment of a cultured Frenchwoman to a strict Brahmin way of life is told in detail for the first time. Such a charming, intelligent, and observant account of what is still a novel experience for any non-Hindu is also important in another respect; for it shows how an age-old traditional pattern of life can change without being corrupted by the Westernization which is sweeping through India today.

10 Rhodes, Geoffrey. Dalmatia: The New Riviera. Illustrated with Numerous Photographs and a Map.
London: Stanley Paul & Co., Ltd., (1931). First Edition.
Octavo, purple cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 287 pp. Very Good, with slight bowing to covers, in a tape-repaired dust jacket. From dust jacket: Dalmatia has always been a country with such interest for the travelled and cultured few that the standard books about it are expensive and difficult to procure. The present work aims at presenting a useful birds-eye view for the intending visitor and others. Dalmatia has lately been rediscovered on account of its wonderful health-giving seaside resorts and the beauty of the scenery. The becoming national dress is worn everywhere, and the people are friendly and only too willing to welcom visitors. Sunbathing on the beach, gay music and dancing in the hotels, and yet the tourist has merely to turn right or left to find himself in the narrow winding streets of an entrancing mediaeval city where no motorcar can penetrate and he can accordingly wander at will. The traveller can visit the laurel groves that provided the Romans with their bays, while Minerva taught the women to embroider the Imperial robes. This new Riviera is within easy reach of London and promises to be the coming great resort for English people.

First Edition. Octavo, black cloth, uncut, xiii, 238 pp. Very Good, with light shelfwear. “This is the story of four people who suddenly decided to take an automobile trip around Norway, Sweden and Denmark...It is not a travel book. It makes no attempt to ‘cover' the Scandinavian countries. There are certain experiences, however, so beautiful, so unusual, so filled with color and contrast, that the temptation to write about them becomes irresistible. Motoring in Scandinavia is at the top of the list..." Includes a “Memorandum to Travelers", “for the benefit of those who want to know something about road conditions, itineraries, maps and all that sort of thing..."
