49 Pai, Inez Kong; Transl., Ed. The Ever White Mountain: Korean Lyrics in the Classical Sijo Form. Translated and Edited by Inez Kong Pai. With Illustrations by Taishin Kin.
Tokyo: John Weatherhill, Inc., (1965).
This deluxe first edition has been limited to 1500, of which only 1250 are for sale, 500 in the Far East and 750 elsewhere. Octavo, brown silk (hardcover), 175 pp. Neat ink underlining throughout and former-library stamp to ffep; otherwise, attractive, with light edgewear; in a Good dust jacket with sunned spine and small tear along upper joint. Illustrated. From dust jacket: It is only in recent years that Western understanding of the Orient has begun to be enriched by a small number of excellent pioneer works devoted to Korea, the Land of Morning Calm. The present book belongs among these works, for this is a sparkling presentation of a major poetic form hitherto virtually unknown to the West -- the brief and evokative Korean Sijo. Similar in many ways to the painterly verse of China and the now-familiar haiku and tanka of Japan, the Sijo was the most popular poetic vehicle of the Korean people for over five hundred yearrs following its adoption by the upper classes in the mid-fourteenth century. Kings, princes, philosophers, and scholar-officials expressed themselves through Sijo, and in later years this also became the exponent form of the courtesans, minor functionaries, wandering singers, and eventually of the common people. This is, in short, a national poetry, a revelation of the Korean heart. For the Westerner, The Ever White Mountain will also be something more, for in many different ways it is a commentary upon Korean history and culture. Many Sijo deal with the great events which shaped the land; many reflect the pervasive influence of Taoism and Neo-Confucianism. These are personal poems, most often spontaneously composed, and they reveal not only individualistic and, on occaision, intensely passionate feelings, but also prevailing manners and attitudes. And, from the great number of pastoral lyrics, there emerges a picture of the physical environment of Korea...

57 Sasa, Sho; Editor. A Pictorial History of Kinjo Gakuin, 1889-1989. [Text in Japanese Characters with English Translation].
Kinjo Gakuin, 1989. First Edition.
Quarto, hardcover (rose cloth), gilt letters, 111 pp. Chancellor's letter taped to ffep.; otherwise, Fine, in a Near-Fine dust jacket with minor rubbing to edges, in protective mylar wrapper. From Chancellor's note: This year Kinjo Gakuin celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding. This book was compiled by Sho Sasa of the high school to give the reader a visual record of the various changes which have taken place throughout the school's history. One century ago in the Chubu District of Japan the social position of women was regrettably low with women's education in a very underdeveloped state. The seed sown by one American missionary helped to change all that for women in the Nagoya area. With God's guidance and the efforts of the teachers throughout the school's history, great improvements and progress have been made. The school now stands upon the foudnation of these 100 years and as we look toward the next century we would like to thank all those who have contributed so much to make Kinjo Gajin what it is today and to ask for your continued support in the many tomorrows to come.
