Reveues & corrigees en pusieurs endroicts, & augmentees d'un fort ample Traicte des Fiebures, tant en general qu'en particulier, & de la curation d'celles, nouvellement treuvee dans les manuscrits de l'Autheur. Paris: Nicolas Buon, 1628.
Folio, contemporary calf (hardcover, leather), [xxviii], 1-1228, [i blank], 1229-1320 [cxiv] pp. Double title page, one in red & black, the other illustrated; illustrated with 373 woodcuts depicting surgical equipment, various surgical procedures, including amputations and breast removals, along with a chapter on “monsters,” showing conjoined twins and other anomalies, as well as number of animals from around the world, both real anc fanciful. Albrecht Durer has given us the illustration depicting a rhinoceros and an elephant. The illustrated title page depicts Pare at surgical work, anatomical figures, surgical instruments, and several monsters. There is hardly a medical subject here that is not discussed: anatomy, physiology, obstetrics, pathology, pharmacy, the duties of the physician, the tricks of quacks, even demonology, the influence of the stars, etc. This edition is the first to include the treatise on fevers, and serves as the source for all subsequent editions. Pare, from a Huguenot family, poorly educated, and beginning as a barber-surgeon at age 19, became the greatest military surgeon before his fellow countryman, Larrey, more than 200 years later. Probably his best known innovations were his discarding the use of boiling oil in gunshot wounds and the re-introduction of simple ligature instead of red hot cautery after amputation. He invented many surgical and dental instruments and was especially adept at devising ingeious artificial limbs, several of which are illustrated. Garrison & Morton (5th) 5565 (the 1575 edition); Janet Doe, A Bibliography of the Works of the Works of Ambroise, 37). The second title page ( in red & black) has been repaired and several letters have been supplied in manuscript. Six preliminary leaves have been supplied as photocopies, as well as pp. 237-238. The lower corner of pp. 949-950 is lacking and that leaf has been supplied with a photocopy being laid-in. Several other pages show some repair of old stains, generally not affecting the text. Due to the size and weight of this volume, additional postage will be required for international and expedited orders.
