3 Fedden, Sir Roy; M.B.E., D.Sc., Hon. F.R.Ae.S., Hon. F.I.A.S. Britain's Air Survival. An Appraisement and Strategy for Success. With an Introduction by Edward Lanchbery.
London: Cassell & Company Ltd., 1957. First Edition.
Signed & inscribed by the author. With a typed, signed letter by the author. Octavo, blue boards (hardcover), gilt letters, xxiv, 151 pp. Near-Fine, with bookplate and light foxing to page edges; in a Very Good dust jacket in protective mylar wrapper with edgewear that includes light chipping. From dust jacket: This is a book to shock the public into a militant crusade. Britain's leading aeronautical expert writes in the belief that public awareness of the dangerous failure of the British aircraft industry to keep abreast of post-war development will force a radical reorganisation of aircraft planning and production. Sir Roy Fedden's strictures on post-war policies and methods of production in this country are accepted by leaders of the industry; lip service has long been paid to the truth of his arguments. But nothing has been done to stop the disastrous decline in British air superiority. Britain still lacks enough skilled manpower to carry out the development of all the products of our inventive genius; neither the Government nor the industry has produced adequate leadership to bring to fruition the brillance of our technologists; a chronic lack of modern research and testing equipment impedes the development of advanced supersonic research. Sir Roy Fedden has been one the leading men of the aircraft industry since the First World War. In Britain's Air Survival he sets out the causes of Britain's faiure and the policies that must be followed to retreieve the situation. He outlines a programme for the next ten years, and the policies and methods that must be used to make that programme possible. He appeals for more scope for technical education in line with the facilities in this field in the U.S.A. and U.S.S.R. He calls for an independent commission in line with the Finletter Commission which, in 1947-8, set the U.S. aircraft industry on the road to pre-eminence. If Britain is to survive as a major air power reorganisation must begin now. This book explains why it is vitally necessary and how Britain's prestige can be saved. It calls for action now; it is up to an informed public to press for that action.

17 Skelton, R. A.; Marston, Thomas E. and George D. Painter. The Vinland Map and the Tartar Relation. With a Foreword by Alexander O. Vietor.
New Haven: Yale University Press, 1966. Fourth Printing.
Folio, red boards (hardcover), gilt letters, xii, 291 pp. Bookplate; otherwise, Fine in a Fine dust jacket. Published for the first time are two documents copied about 1440 from much earlier originals, now lost. The first is an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols in 1245-47. The second is a world map, including the western ocean, with delineations of Iceland, Greenland, and a land mass named Vinland which represents the North American mainland as known to the medieval Norsemen. This map is the earliest known and indisputable cartographic representation of any part of the Americas...As the editors show, the Tartan Relation provides information on Mongol history and legend not be found in any known source, and a portion of the Map represents the only surviviing medieval example based on Norse cartography -- a conclusion with far-reaching implications for the history of cartography and the Viking navigations.

20 Bishop, Air Marshal William A.; Royal Canadian Air Force, V.C., C.B., D.S.O. and Bar, M.C. D.F.C., Legion of Honor, Croix de Guerre. Winged Peace.
New York: The Viking Press, 1944.
Octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, gilt illustration to upper cover, xiv, vi, 175 pp. Very Good, with sunning to edges and former-owner bookplate; in a Good dust jacket with edgewear with includes light chipping. From dust jacket: The great story of aviation and the direction in which it is going is the story of our future -- a future which will be written in terms of either winged peace or winged death. It's a story which few men could tell with the authority and conviction of ‘Billy' Bishop. Bishop learned aviation the hard way. In the cockpit of a World War I flying crate he became the greatest Allied ace by destroying 72 German aircraft. In the years between the wars, he remained actively interested in aviation -- both military and commercial -- and kept a wary eye on the growing air might of Germany, which he was sure we would have to fight again. When World War II broke, Canada became the heart of Britain's air-training and air-transport system, and ‘Billy' Bishop has played a vital role in this great program. Now, at the climax of his career, he has undertaken a new job and rendered what may well be his greatest service to aviation. He has poured into an utterly fascinating book the past, the present and -- most of all -- the future of flight. He has told the story of aviation from Kitty Hawk to the B-29 Superfortresses, much of it in terms of his personal experiences. He shows us how our world has already been changed geographically, socially, economically, politically; how these changes will be either for great good or for desperate evil. He makes us aware of the new world map with its limitless directions and its textbook-shattering implications. He shows us the new routes over which we will either trade or fight, find peace or destruction. Through all of Bishop's stirring account, written with burning urgency, runs a zeal to make us understand the realities of world aviation today. The proved possibilities of stratospheric flight, rocket and jet-propulsion, have already rendered every plane now in the air obsolete. New York to London in three hours is assured. Tomorrow's air age is here!
