London: Studio Editions, [1996].
Quarto, (hardcover), red cloth, gilt letters, glossy full-color illus. pages, 224 pp. Fine, in like dust jacket. ‘Using contemporary illustrations and descriptions, material from trade catalogues, design manuals and essays on taste, this book highlights a diversity of styles. Victorian Interior Style provides both a chronological survey of the important events and personalities involved in the history of nineteenth-century design and a social and economic context for the different types of furnishings and decorations that emerged. Revivalist and traditional styles are examined as closely as the more innovative teendencies and, where possible, attention is focused upon the circumstances in which all of them were employed. Most importantly, the authors examine the reasons for the popularity -- or lack of it -- of these different styles, providing an insight into why many are still fashionable today.' 12 Kostof, Spiro. The City Assembled: The Elements of Urban Form Through History. With the Collaboration of Greg Castillo. Original Drawings by Richard Tobias.
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, A Bulfinch Press Book, (1992). First North American Edition.
Large square octavo, blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 320 pp. Fine (As New) in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. Illustrated. From dust jacket: ...[Kostof] traces the component elements that make up different types of cities; streets, public places, urban divisions (religious, political, and social), and the fringe area where city and countryside meet. In every instance, Professor Kostof follows a story that ranges widely in time and place up to the present to indicate that the discussion remains fresh and engages our own time in unexpected ways. In the past, all the elements of a city evolved in response to a variety of pressures. Today they are usuallly the result of planning decisions. In a final chapter, Kostof considers “urban process” -- the effect on cities of natural disasters, war, and comprehensive redevelopment, compared with incremental growth and change. His book is thus an exercise in architectural and social history, a case study for the present, and a pointer for the future. Urban form is never innocent of social content: it is merely the matrix within which we organize daily life, and we have strong opinions about it. Modernism was a harsh intrusion in the development of almost every theme. The current recovery from the less tolerant aspects of that doctrine has made us look again at what it is that we treasure in the traditional city, and how we can recharge the old urban forms with present-day common sense. The story is also told in over three hundred drawings, prints, paintings, and photographs that trace not only patterns but uses, from the colonnaded street of ancient Palmyra to the recent demonstrations in Prague's Wenceslas Square.

13 Kostof, Spiro. The City Shaped: Urban Patterns and Meanings Through History. Original Drawings by Richard Tobias.
Boston: Little, Brown and Company, A Bulfinch Press Book, (1991). First North American Edition.
Large square octavo, red cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 352 pp. Fine (As New) in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. Illustrated. From dust jacket: ...This volume, by distinguished architectural historian Spiro Kostof, looks at the universal phenomenon of city making in a historical perspective, to consider how and why cities took the shape they did. Amalgams of the living and the built, cities are repositories of cultural meaning. Behind the arbitrary twist of a lane or the splendid eccentricity of a new skyscraper on the skyline lies a history of previous urban tenure, a heritage of long-established social conventions, a string of often bitter compromises between individual rights and the public will. In a series of discussions of organic patterns, the grid, the city as diagram, the grand manner, and the skyline, Professor Kostof fuses the disciplines of architecture, cultural geography, and social history to interpret the hidden orden inscribed in urban patterns. Hundreds of photographs, historical views, and specially commissioned drawings vividly depict a global mosaic of city building: the formation of Italy's medieval Siena, its organic pattern shaped by stron aesthetic choices; the creation of New Delhi as the crown of the British Raj; the remodeling of Moscow as the self-styled captial of world socialism; and the privatization of the skyline, as religious and civic symbols yield to the towers of corporate business...

20 Peterson, Harold L. Americans at Home: From the Colonists to the Late Victorians. A Pictorial Source Book of America's Domestic Interiors with an Appendix of Inns and Taverns.
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, [1971]. First Edition.
Quarto, red illus. cloth (hardcover), xviii p. 205 plates. 29 cm. Fine, in Very Good dust jacket with several small tears and chips. “In this delightful book, which proves the saying that one picture is worth a thousand words, Harold Peterson has assembled over 200 pictures illustrating American indoor life, a wonderfully diverse selection from a wide variety of sources. He begins with the earliest useful picture of an American interior, dated 1659, and continues for more than two centuries, using 1876, the date of the Philadelphia Centennial, as a convenient stopping point. The majority are family groups, many of which include pets -- dogs, cats and cage birds. The earliest painters have painstakingly included details of the rooms and furnishings, not always in perspective but clearly showing the casings of windows and doors, floor coverings, upholstery and draperies as well as actual furniture. As the book progresses to themore sophisticated work of the lat 18th and 19th centuries, the backgrounds are clearly shown by the artists to reflect the status of the people depicted and range from elegant drawing rooms to simple cabins. A section on inns and taverns provides some lively interiors with furnishings which would not appear in private homes. Detailed captions accompany each picture.”
