He guided and occasionally nurtured budding hunters. He built a business and raised a family. He never lost a client, friend, partner, kith nor kin. Not that it wasn't close one in a while -- for there wer close scrapes -- nor that there aren't memories that are funny because no one got hurt -- some funny things happened. They're all to be found in Aagaard's Africa, A Hunter Remembers. They're all part of Fin Aagaard's life and his style of living. They are proof of his mettle...

7 Finaughty, William. Capstick, Peter; Series Editor. The Recollections of William Finaughty: Elephant Hunter, 1864 - 1875.
New York: St. Martin's Press, (1991). First Edition.
Octavo, green boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 242 pp. Near-Fine, in a Near-Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Taken from the years well before and during the Anglo-Boer War, one of the great, early ivory hunters told his adventures to a friend who owned the pioneer paper The Rhodesian Journal. Adventurer, rogue, and hunter extraordinaire, William Finaughty survived the death that awaited many early elephant hunters, bagging over five hundred tuskers in five year, as well as living through the intrigues with which the early South Africa was fraught. “Bill” Finaughty even shot five elephants with four bullets, a feat that is typical of this book. That he hunted entirely with a muzzle-loading rifle adds a great deal of zest to this classic tale of which only 250 copies were printed, and less than half survive today. Peter Capstick, the editor, has one of them.

From lower cover: With time slipping away, I looped down crosswind and slipped into the weedy waterway and worked toward the deer. The wind wan't swirling out here; instead the 20 to 25 mph blasts were blowing the 4” of snow around pretty steadily. It was a long shot at best, but giving up has never been one of my foibles. Twenty minutes later, I was within 40 yards of the biggest doe and it was time for extreme care. When the wind subsided, I sopped. When it picked up, I tried to squeeze a few more steps out of my stalk, just as I had miled the 99-day season down to the final 10 minutes...
