He served four years as an officer in the Navy during World War II and participated in the invasion of the Soloman Islands under Admiral Halsey's first Joint Army, Navy & Marine operations. He started his mining career in the office of Coal Development of the Chessie System located in Huntington. This office supervised the leasing of coal and timber on the one-half million acres of land owned by the railroad subsidiaries. He was promoted to head of the office in 1960 and became Asst. Vice President in 1973. He retired in 1980 and is now a Coal Consultant.
