Since the beginning of the program in 1946, the National Park Service, the Smithsonian Institution, and several state organizations have made archeological surveys in 185 proposed reservoir areas besides conducting excavations in 18. These surveys uncovered remains ranging in time from the early Folsom type of primitive hunter to the more elaborate, late prehistoric Temple Mound Buildiner, and they vary in character from simple village sites in open fields to complexly arranged mound structures.
